Dr. Danny Avula


The Director of the Richmond City Health District since 2016, Dr. Danny Avula was also named Director of the Henrico County Department of Health in late 2018. An energetic physician, Dr. Avula believes in collaboration and cooperation to address public health challenges and build healthy, active, and vibrant communities throughout the Richmond region.

Dr. Avula joined the Richmond City Health District in 2009 as a deputy director. He earned his bachelor’s degree at the University of Virginia and his medical degree at Virginia Commonwealth University. He also has a master’s in public health from Johns Hopkins University. He is a board-certified pediatrician and also is a specialist in preventive medicine.

Dr. Avula’s collaborative approach includes involving a variety of community partners to come up with innovative public health strategies, and he is an enthusiastic supporter of the work that many different organizations undertake on a daily basis to build an Active RVA.
